Teak Care & Maintenance
Teak is carefully chosen for use in Linen Mill garden furniture due to its durability and resistance to extreme weather
conditions. Teak is a dense, close-grained hardwood that naturally contains high levels of oil. These qualities enable the
wood to remain strong and long lasting making it ideal for outdoor use.
Weathering
When Linen Mill Teak is delivered to your home or garden it will arrive untreated. The appearance of the wood will be of a
golden brown colour and the surface will be highly finished. Linen Mill recommends that the teak is left untreated so that
it will weather to an attractive shade of silvery-grey. The surface will become increasingly rough to the touch and small cracks may appear in the end grain. These are the natural characteristics of teak and will not affect the structure of your furniture. Treatment or no treatment- the longevity of the timber will remain the same.
Treatment
Linen Mill Teak Protector is a water-based product designed to maintain the golden brown colour for a longer
period of time. Upon application the golden brown colour will not be altered and the weathering process will be delayed
for approximately one season. We suggest using the Teak Protector within a few days of removing the packaging.
An application is required as a continuous routine approximately once every 6 months.
Linen Mill Teak Shield is also a water- based product that can be used to minimise the effects of staining caused by
wine, olive oil, butter and other greasy substances. The Shield is a wood impregnator that can be used independently or
after the Protector has been applied.
Linen Mill Teak Cleaner is an abrasive product intended for use after the teak has weathered to a silvery- grey colour.
The Cleaner is intended to remove the weathered surface after the furniture has oxidised. After application the furniture
should be allowed to dry and then brushed clean. Linen Mill Teak Protector should then be applied if the golden brown
colour is to be maintained.
Cleaning
To remove accumulated surface dirt (e.g. leaves) warm water or a hose and a hard scrubbing brush should be sufficient.
However, if the dirt has penetrated the wood then it is advised to lightly sand the affected area, when dry, using fine
sandpaper. When using sandpaper always remember to sand with, rather than against, the grain.
Teak FAQ's
How do I care for my teak furniture?Teak is a dense hardwood with a highly natural oil content. Left untreated outdoors it will gradually lighten to a silvery grey colour.this is a popular choice and doesnot affect the strength or durability of the product.
What if I dont like the silvery grey colour?
To maintain the original colour we recommend applying a water-based product, Teak Protector, soon after delivery. It is quick and easy to apply and will maintain the golden brown colour.
What about stains and spills?
If you also want to protect the furniture from all stains and spills you can apply an additional treatment, Teak Shield.
Should I treat my furniture with teak oil?
We do not recommend oiling your furniture. Many teak oils are actually refined linseed oil and were developed for use on indoor furniture. You shouldnot use these oils on teak outdoor furniture.
Cracks have appeared on my furniture - is this normal?
When teak adjusts to it's new enviroment cracks can appear. The cracks can vary in size according to the temperature but they will not affect the structural of the furinture.
Should I cover my teak furniture?
It is not necessary to cover your furniture. However, if you do wish to cover it make sure it is well ventilated. If the furniture is not allowed to breathe then it can sweat and mould spots occur.
My furniture has gone black - is this normal?
There are a number of reasons why the furniture can go black. The black colour colour can develop through general atmospheric dirt or the use off a nonbreathable cover and/or the use of teak oil. to clean the furniture a fine grade of sand paper will remove surface residue and then we recommend an application of bramblecrest Teak Protector.
Care & Maintenance for Woven Furniture
The Linen Mill Woven garden furniture retains the classic style and aesthetic qualities of natural wicker but is also
impervious to the elements.
Made from extruded polyethylene, it is UV-resistant and not adversely effected by temperature variations. The framework is
constructed from tubular aluminium, making it lightweight, strong and maintenance-free. The flexibility of the weave also
creates a heightened level of comfort.
The woven furniture table top glass is toughened to ensure that it is difficult to break. The glass is also tempered so that if it
is shattered then the remaining fragments are not sharp.
In a garden environment the atmosphere contains many impurities, which over time can create a layer of dirt on the furniture.
Should such a build-up occur then a sponge or soft scrubbing brush can be used with lukewarm water to clean the surface
of the product.
To clean the table top glass we suggest the use of any proprietary* household glass or window cleaner. We recommend
cleaning the product at least once a season.
*Proprietary (non-Linen Mill) Care & Maintenance products can be used but The Linen Mill accepts no liability for the use
of such products.
